Cityscapes Plein Air Painting with Mitchell Long (Spring 2016) 12 sessions

Mitchell Long is a full time plein air painter living and working in New Orleans. Mitchell attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and has won numerous awards and grants in painting. His brushy approach to the landscape encourages experimentation with perspective. In his approach realism approaches abstraction. Mitchell's work is widely collected in the south. We are happy to offer this class for the first time. Locations to be determined in Faubourg Marigny and French Quarter. Previous experience desirable: Beginning Painting.
Class is limited to 12 students.

When: Wednesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Dates: 12 sessions: 1/20, 1/27, no class 2/3 for Mardi Gras, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16, 3/23, 3/30, 4/6, 4/13.

Cost: $684 due in full upon registration. Please review cancellation policy before registering.
Minimum number of students: 4
After minimum number of students is reached, drop-in classes are available at $60/class.

Portrait Painting (Spring 2016) 13 sessions (NOAFA)

This class teaches the fundamentals of painting the head in oil. Students will paint the model from life. Beginning with a toned canvas, students will execute a careful drawing and subsequently build up the structure of the head from darks to lights. Emphasis is on understanding the structure of the head and learning to mix colors to create realistic and harmonious flesh tones. The class will begin with a demonstration of the alla prima technique, used by John Singer Sargent and handed down through generations of atelier painters and teachers.

Prerequisites: Beginning Drawing. Beginning Painting. Portrait Drawing.

Dates: 13 sessions: Dates: 1/16, 1/23, (no class for Mardi Gras 1/30 and 2/6), 2/13, 2/20, 2/27, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, (no class 3/26 for Easter break), 4/2, 4/16, 4/23, 4/30
